How Does Conception Happen?
For conception to occur, a man’s sperm needs to meet a woman’s egg. The odds of this are greatest during the period of ovulation, which tends to occur on day 10 and 17 of a 28-day female cycle. This is known as your fertility window.
This is when the woman’s ovary releases an egg to be fertilized. The egg lives for somewhere between 12 and 24 hours, while a sperm can live for three days. Couples who are actively trying to get pregnant should try on days when the woman is ovulating.
Can A Woman Get Pregnant While On Her Period?
The chances of a woman getting pregnant while she is on her period are significantly lower than at any other time, but it can still happen.
One or two days after the bleeding starts is the least likely time when the odds are close to zero, but you need to remember that those odds are not precisely zero.
With each day that passes after that, those odds start going up. When you hit day 13, the odds have grown to nine percent.
What this means is that even if you are confident that the date occurred while your partner was on her period, there is still a chance that it could have resulted in pregnancy.
It’s just a small chance. For anyone who is not trying for a baby, the warning is that there is no time of the month where sex without a condom cannot result in a pregnancy.
Furthermore, you can also get pregnant just after your period has finished, although, again this is unlikely.
Alternatively, if you and your partner want to conceive, then you should know that it is possible at any time.
What Makes Pregnancy More Likely?
If your partner has a clear understanding of her cycle and fertility window, then you will have a better chance of knowing which days will give you the best chance of conception.
There are apps that can help, such as ovulation trackers, and it is important to remember that you should be going by your personal data rather than some generic numbers found online.
You and your partner can also look at switching up your diet plans as weight can have an impact on the chances of conception.
For men, being overweight can have a real impact on their sperm quality and concentration, not to mention their endocrine system.
There are plenty of lifestyle changes that you should both think about, including cutting down on drinking alcohol (or ideally stopping it altogether if you are trying for a baby), and both you should quit smoking as soon as possible if you do so.

Exercise is important to maintain a healthy body weight, but more strenuous workouts could be a risk factor which may increase the risk of anovulation for those exercising in excess of 60 minutes per day.
However, exercise duration of 30-60 minutes daily decreased the risks.
Men should also be aware that exercising can help improve sperm quality and as such should avoid a sedentary lifestyle.
How Does Diet Play A Role?
